Night bus services in Calder Bay will be free to use between midnight and 5 a.m. from January, the mayor announced, in a two-year trial aimed at shift workers and safer journeys home.

The scheme will be funded by a small levy on venues licensed to open after midnight. Venue owners said they had been consulted and supported the plan.

Transport officials will publish ridership figures every quarter.
